Remember that a treat is exactly that: a treat. Do not be tempted to give your dog a treat simply because he begs for one. You should use treats to get your dog to do what you want, and not let him manipulate you to get one. A reward for completing a training lesson, improving behavioral problems, or following a good walk are all good times to reward your pup with a dog treat.

You should also give high quality treats. Many commercial brands use chemical additives, colorings, by-products, and rancid grease in their products, but they are in no way healthful. Instead of buying commercial dog treats, consider making your own.

Delicious and nutritious dog treats for larger dogs is chicken bones. They can eat the entire bone, marrow and all. Boiled eggs are healthful treats as well. You can also make peanut butter and nut rolls, or put peanut butter inside your dogs favorite toy.

He can amuse himself playing with the toy to get to the peanut butter inside. Use your imagination and check to be sure you are not putting any allergens or toxins in your dog treats. A trip to the vet is not a very good treat at all for your furry companion!
