Healthy Weight Loss - Why Mom and Grandma Were Right
In previous articles, I have discussed 'old wives tales' which are either unhelpful or plain wrong. This time I am coming out on the side of well-meaning moms and grandmas who have got it right with their advice. This was usually not given to help with healthy weight loss, but is relevant and useful anyway, because it makes good sense for general good health.
The number one instruction is one which can apply to so many aspects of today's fast-paced and busy lifestyles.
Do not 'bolt down' your food, take the time to chew every mouthful thoroughly. Well there are very sound scientific reason why this can help you with your healthy weight loss diet. Not least the fact that when you do take enough time with each mouthful, you are likely to eat a little less. Your system has time 'catch up' with the fact that you have had enough.
There is also the added benefit that your digestion process starts earlier (actually in the mouth), so the system works better.
With fast food constantly available and meal time routines a thing of the past for many people, this practice could make a huge difference. Combine it with not eating unless you are sitting at the table - another thing mom insisted on - then the problems caused by regularly gulping down food in the car or on the street would also be a thing of the past.
Now it took me a long time to accept that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I am totally in agreement now. Once you realise how important it is to increase your blood sugar level, you will make a point of not skipping your first meal of the day.
A major problem is that the results of living through your mornings with low blood sugar do not really show themselves in the short term.
This can be made worse for those who believe that their 'feeling in a bad mood' can be cured with enough morning coffee. It really is no substitute for making sure you are properly nourished.
Once you are used to being able to be at your best long before noon, you will not go back to sacrificing breakfast for an extra few minutes in bed.
So while some of grandma's ideas were too old-fashioned to work nowadays, it is certainly not the case with all of them. They can still have some important lessons to teach us.
