Heli Skiing Is The Winter Sport For Adrenaline Junkies

Flying down the side of the mountain with the heart racing and adrenaline pumping is some thrill seekers way of experiencing all nature has to offer

. Crunching through the snow at top speeds and feeling the wind whip is a way some people love to spend the day. But what if there was a way to add another element of danger, and a little more thrill to the sport of skiing? Heli-skiing makes regular old skiing look like childs play. This is not for the faint of heart, but for those who want the ultimate thrill that is like non-other.

Riding a ski lift to the top of a mountain is monotonous to some people. Thrill seekers are ditching the ski lift and opt for a helicopter, thats right a helicopter. The major difference in this type of adventure is it usually does not happen on a groomed ski slope, but rather in a natural area that needs a helicopter to access. Steep slopes are a friend to the heli skier and the steeper the incline the more of an adrenaline rush they get. These are not your average winter sports junkies, these are the extremist who live on the edge and are not afraid to take risks.

Heli skiing has been around since about the 1960s and was first introduced in Canada. Because of the rugged terrain and steep deserted mountains, Canada is still one of the leaders in this extreme skiing sport. Those who are up for such an adventure need to know a few basics before jumping in the chopper. Safety is the biggest concern with any sports. Knowing what types of snow a skier is dealing with, as well as what things to watch for on the slopes are important, especially to the heli skier.

For starters, there are basically three types of snow that a skier will encounter, and knowing how to maneuver each type is important. The first is corn snow. This refers to a type of snow that is wet in nature. This snow has been through many cycles and perhaps frozen and thawed a few times. It can make things slippery on the slopes, so it is important to know how to deal with this type of mix. Everyone wants a nice traditional power snow but that is not always the case. A skier has to be reader for any kind of snow.

A type of snow that heli skiers need to be aware of is crust. This is that thin layer of ice that forms and has a powder snow underneath it. It can usually easily be broken by the skis and leave a way for beautiful powder to ski on. While there are courses that allow shuttles to specific areas of the slopes, true heli skiing is done in a remote area. Before anyone takes on such an adventure as heli skiing, they need to be able to ski the intermediate and expert runs on the slopes. The clothing worn in heli-skiing is the same as traditional skiing; the equipment is the same, but the experience it is like none other. For the thrill of a lifetime, heli skiing is the ultimate in snow adventures.
