Hello Kitty is a fictional character that has defied most of the rules of popular culture and has been doing so for more than three and a half decades now. No other character has ever cut across generational divides for so long and been so successful at it. The character is one of a kind in its appeal to parents and children alike and in the sheer size and the reach of the industry and the interest that it has created.
The adorable little white kitten image was created by a very old Japanese company that was established in 1960 to create gift items and merchandise. The company which is called Sanrio is now one of the most famous in the world in the merchandise and licensing business. A lot of its fame and the brand recognition that it commands in countries around the world can be attributed to the one character that it created in 1974, a white kitten with no discernible nose and a distinctive red bow on one side of its head. The company first started marketing and selling merchandise and products with Hello Kitty on them a year later in 1975 and the rest as the saying goes is history.
Today Sanrio's little kitten is sold on thousands of different products that it manufacturers itself and sells through a mind boggling twelve thousand plus locations that include department stores as well as own brand stores. The company has had equal or perhaps even greater success licensing the brand to companies around the world and the tie ups have resulted in some of the most unexpected and sometimes even bizarre items and products and even promotions that have ever been seen.
Today one can buy if one so chooses, highly expensive jewellery with precious metals and black diamonds in the shape of the little white cat. There are kitty buses and even a kitty airplane. You can visit two separate officially licensed theme parks as well, Harmonyland and Sanrio Puroland if you are a truly die hard fan.
The little white kitten has also got some achievements to her credit that few other fictional characters can boast of. In the nineteen nineties Japan made her its official mascot for the tourism development and marketing efforts in China and Hong Kong. Japan has never done this before or since. The little white cat is truly one of a kind.
