Help For Smoking - Understanding Stress
Stress is a part of all lives, and understanding how it relates to our smoking habits will help in our attempts to quit.
Almost all life events can contribute to our levels of stress, even if we do not realize it. Identifying these events and understanding that we get can be affected by them will give us the ammunition we need to control how we react to them. We all have different reactions to stress, some of us eat more when stressed out and some people grab a cigarette and start to smoke.
When we start to realize we are reacting this way, we can than try to replace the cigarette with some other more healthy ideas. Maybe you could try chewing a piece of gum instead of the usual response and see how that works out. If you can not think of any workable ideas yourself, maybe with some research you can try some things that others have used successfully. Do not expect everything to work for you, as we all react in different ways. But, with a little effort you will soon discover what works for you.
- Stop doing things that contribute to your ongoing health problems, like eating too much junk food.
Try adding more fresh fruit and vegetables to your diet instead of that bag of microwave popcorn when you get the munchies. Some nutritionists believe too much coffee can take away from your sleep time. If this is you, just drink less coffee, especially in the evening time.
- Don't be afraid to discuss what is giving you stress in your everyday life with someone you trust.
Share your successes and failures along the way with others like you, who can give you support when you need it Keeping these issues inside will only make them worse, so try getting this stuff out in the open and see if you can resolve these issues. Getting feedback from a friend can give you just what you need to get past your problem.
- If things are getting out of control, try to get away to a different location and surroundings, even if for just a weekend.
This will free up your mind from all the everyday pressures and hopefully let you recharge yourself. Even if you can not get away physically, try just closing your eyes and pretend you are somewhere else.
- When you wake up in the morning, try to do a certain exercise routine to start the day.
Drink a bottle of water and put on your favorite exercise video, preferably somebody with a sense of humor that makes you smile. After all, you will not look forward to doing a routine like one given in a military boot camp style. Try several routines so you don't get bored and look for at least one that incorporates yoga into the routine. You will find the yoga part of the routine will cause a calmness to come over you and hopefully last throughout your day.
- Lastly, always remember to not dwell on your problems all the time as almost 98% of all that we worry about never comes to pass.
What we do focus our minds on all the time is what will materialize in our lives. So let us focus on how our life will be when smoking is a thing of the past.
