Help! I just bought my College Books and now I'm Broke!
It's your first day of college and the smell of academia is in the air. You get your class schedule and the excitement of expanding your mind's knowledge is so overwhelming, you rush to the college bookstore to get a jumpstart on your required reading. However, by the time you fight the crowds gather what feels like to be 100LBs in books, and make your way to the cashier; you realize that your books alone cost half of your entire summer savings. Many students experience this wallet robbing at the beginning of every semester. On average, a student will spend $400-$500 dollars on college textbooks every semester.
So, why are textbooks so expensive?
Textbooks are never written by just one person. Most college textbooks are a collaboration of several authors. It can take years of experience to write a textbook covering all areas of a subject, not to mention any gathered data such as pictures and graphics. Once the book is written it goes to the publisher where manufacturing costs and publicity costs come into the mix. By the time it reaches the shelves, storage, delivery, and stocking fees are already added and the final step is the mark up price the college bookstore so greedily demands.
The constant updating of textbooks is also a contributing factor as to why textbook prices are through the roof. The world changes every day, which means new technologies and information central to a decent education must be added to textbooks every few years. This makes it difficult for students looking to buy cheap textbooks.
Textbook companies and college bookstores don't lower prices or have sales because they don't have to. They are guaranteed customers every August and January, because few students can get away without buying a book required for a specific class, not to mention the risk of not having the resource.
So, how do students save on books?
One of the best ways to save money and search for discounted textbooks is by shopping online. Websites can offer students great deals on textbooks and at much lower prices compared to the college bookstore. Price comparison sites like, www.cheapesttextbooks.com, work to help students find the lowest possible price on all their semester's books!
See the video or read the story of a real-life case where a student who bought the cheapest textbooks then sold them back to her college bookstore at a small profit! It might just help you when purchasing and saving on your college textbooks:
