. Laws prohibiting having your hands on your cell phone while driving are becoming much more common these days. This means that while you can talk on your phone, you can't be holding it. If you have bluetooth set up you can talk on your phone, for many hours, hands free! So if you need to call and tell your family where you're at so they don't worry, you can do it, hands free. This is not only a great thing because of the laws, but because it's really safer to have both hands available while driving, anyway. This is a must have for a long road trip!

A satellite radio receiver is a very nice thing to have on a road trip in particular! With normal AM/FM radio you'll have to find new stations every forty miles, and of course there are those towns where you won't be getting anything at all. With satellite radio this isn't a problem, you can listen to the same station for the whole ten hour drive if you so choose--although you'll probably want to surf around since there are a ton of options.

An absolute must have for a stress free trip is a GPS. With a paper map you'll be constantly fighting with a big piece of paper while trying to drive and navigate. Who knows if the roads are still there since they made the map or if they were washed out two years ago. With a GPS you can put in that you want to go the fastest route, the shortest road, or that you want to avoid highways or toll roads, and your system will navigate for you and tell you turn by turn where to go. If you miss a turn--that's ok--your system will reroute for you. This is an easy way to navigate the way you want to go with low stress and it's safer to do while driving.
