Helpful Tips For Dealing With Nappy (diaper) Rash
Nappy rash, or diaper rash, has been a problem that parents have been dealing with for as long as there have been babies wearing diapers
. It can be painful for the child and stressful for the parent. Thankfully, although there may be no way to avoid it entirely, there are things that can be done to decrease the chances and shorten the duration of an outbreak.
The first step in prevention is understanding the causes of diaper rash. These rashes occur when the sensitive skin of the baby comes into contact with the harsh waste products that are in a soiled nappy. To make matters worse, the diaper itself prevents fresh air from reaching the affected area. Combine these two factors and add the warmth of the human body and you have just created the perfect environment for a sore.
The best way to prevent these sores is to change the nappy as soon as it becomes soiled. Of course in the real world this is not always possible. To lessen the effects of contact with dirty diapers be sure to cleanse the area well with every change. Pay special attention to the wrinkled areas as these can harbor dirt and germs.
Another good way to avoid nappy (diaper) rash is to allow the affected areas to be exposed to the air as much as possible. After removing the soiled nappy, do not rush to put another one on. Time in the air will not only ensure that the areas gets completely dry but also keep down the numbers of the germs that thrive in the absence of air.
Even when great care is taken, rashes can sometimes still pop up. Everyone seems to have a solution. Some of these are helpful but some have no basis in fact and may even do more harm than good. Knowing the underlying causes of nappy rash will help the parent to make an informed decision.
Once a rash has shown up, a good long soak in the tub may be all that is needed. Gently wash the affected area with a mild soap. If the rash is severe it may help to add baking soda to the bath. This will neutralize any acidity and soothe the pain.
Be cautious before buying any product that claims to heal or prevent nappy rash. There are many available that will help, but some will do nothing or may even make the problem worse. Read the label and talk to your physician before deciding which one will be the most helpful. Always remember that it is much easier to prevent a rash than it is to heal it.
