Aubergines are commonly used as a vegetable for cooking

. Another name for it is eggplant. It is generally considered that it is easy to plant and grow. Nevertheless, care is still needed when growing these plants. To ensure a great bountiful harvest, there are specific guidelines that can be followed. These guidelines will help the plants reach their full growth potential.

Climate is one of the factors that have to be considered in growing aubergines. You need to understand the climate where these plants thrive in. Then you have to match your climate with the location of the plant. Aubergines thrive in warm climate. You can still plant them on cold areas. However, this will lead to stunted growth. Even if they produce flowers, theses would usually fall off and not reach its full growth. During cold seasons, it is best to transfer the plant indoors to a heated greenhouse or room. Then on the summer, they should be transferred outdoors. Make sure to water the plants regularly specially during dry season.

Special care has to be taken in planting and growing Aubergines. Observe good spacing when planting. It is recommended that they are planted 2 feet apart from each other. There are ways to encourage the growth of this plant. When it reaches 12 inches in height, cut off the main tip of the plant. This will also make the plant busy. The soil should be fertilized regularly with a high potassium fertilizer. This is most important when you start to see the beginnings of fruits. To discourage the red spider mites from getting near the plant, you have to regularly moisten the leaves with tepid water.

Aubergines produce large fruits. At some point the large size of the fruit makes it hard for the plant to support its vertical stance. Once you see that five to six fruits have already set, pinch off other flowers. Another way to support the weight of the fruits is by tying stakes to the body of the plant.
