Helping You Stay Safe
What is the Better Business Bureau and how do they help consumers like you
? Is it a government run agency and what is their mission?
The Better Business Bureau (BBB for short) is a private, nonprofit organization. Their goal is promote an ethical relationship between businesses and the public.
This is done through voluntary self-regulation and is improved by business education and consumer education. They are there to provide assistance to both consumers and the businesses selling to them.
You often hear people joking about reporting the local burger joint to the BBB for taking away their favorite meal. Or they might be serious about reporting to the BBB for not keeping their restrooms sanitary.
This is viewed as a negative thing for restaurants because they are being "told on". But if the problem is a legitimate concern, then the restaurant will actually benefit later on from fixing the problem earlier than later.
When you run a restaurant, you want to make sure that people are comfortable coming to your store, enjoy the atmosphere, appreciate the cleanliness and safe food precautions, and want to come back again hopefully bringing some more of their friends. Sometimes managers can miss a problem that exists in their store and are not aware of it until it is pointed out to them.
Or they may not be aware of an employee that is too lazy to do their job correctly and customers are the ones that see it. Whatever the case may be, it can help store owners to fix those problems and to stop them from snowballing into an even bigger problem that they might not be able to recover from.
What kinds of services does the BBB offer? They try to engage in principals that are fair for both the buyer and the seller. They collect and report information that will help prospective buyers make good educated decisions about the things they are thinking about buying.
They have developed programs to encourage businesses to regulate their own advertising and selling practices. And they also stand as a neutral third party to help settle disagreements between buyer and seller.
Education gives you more power and the BBB is completely committed to this idea. That is why they are so insistent on further educating not only the consumer, but also the firm.
They offer services that will help both sides to become better and more successful in all their dealings. Offering a program that enhances consumer confidence is one of their biggest goals.
A report is kept for each business that contains all past information so that a consumer can look up their history and learn a little bit more about the company they could potentially buy from. Information that is kept in these files are things such as; the length of time the company has been around and their standing with the Bureau, a summary of the company's complaint history and other types of experiences that are more positive, and information gathered from the Bureau through past investigations.
The BBB is there to help give credibility to many different types of companies from professional tax services to a law firm to a nail salon. It may be beneficial to your company to recognize their good standing with the BBB if that exists because people are more likely to use your services than another company that has had many complaints before.
Since this is a private Bureau, they do not have authority to force companies to close down, give legal advice, provide credit information, or make collections if there is any debt found. They are only there to assist buyers and sellers through a voluntary means.
The first Bureau opened in 1912 and was mainly used to correct abuses in advertising. This eventually expanded to watching or monitoring many other kinds of companies' activities and performance.
There are now one hundred and thirty-eight BBB in the United States and there are more than fourteen million buyer contacts each year. It is believed that most marketplace problems can be fixed through voluntary means without getting buyers and sellers engaged in some big legal situation.
