Hen Ark Plans 4 Steps to Getting Your Hen Ark Started

If you're like me, when you have a question you want an answer immediately. It's a simple: ask a question, get an answer. But when I look for a simple set of hen ark plans on the internet all I can hardly find an answer. Many sets of plans take you through a whole bunch of setup before ever getting into the nitty gritty of putting up a hen ark. Now I've built my fair share of arks and I know the value of properly doing good prep work; good prep work leads to a good coop. But when I want to start building, I want to start building. So, here are some steps to get you on your way to putting your hen ark up.

Step #1 Build your frame

Now your frames will differ based on the type of ark you want to build. You have a choice between A-frames, two-tiered coops, a coop that includes a run, a chicken tractor, and so on. While the exact size and dimensions will vary, but the once pt remains the same: Put up fours walls and a roof. Of course, you can add a number of other features but the frame stays basically the same.

Step #2 Add a Floor

Many people decide not to add a floor. This has pros and cons. The pro is that since there is not a lot of wood attached to the hen, you move it around more easily. You can attach wheels or other movement devices to make your hen ark mobile. The con is because there is no floor; this makes it a bad structure to use in cold environments. If you live somewhere where the climate is cold and you experience snow for at least part of the year, you would be better off choosing a different style of coop.

Step #3 Build off of the Frame

Once the frame is up, you can attach chicken wire, nesting boxes, a perch or roost, etc. The frame helps you attach all the other necessary parts of the ark. Wire encloses the hens, nesting boxes allow for easy collection of eggs, and a perch or roost allows for socialization and secondary living space for the chickens. You can look to add runs, feeding boxes, watering devices, or temperature control units. The only limits to you hen ark plans are you imagination, so go wild!

Step #4 Add Predator Protection

A big problem with using a hen ark is that they are susceptible to predators. The main part of the hen ark that you need to reinforce is the very bottom. Since it is made up of just wire mesh, prowling animals have an easy time bending to wires, going under, and attacking your chickens. So adding a wooden footer or stronger wire is your best bet to protect your chickens. Now, there are some hen ark plans that include more sophisticated protection, but that protection comes at bigger price.
