High mileage cars will have had time to developed problems, which you will have to either repair straight away or very soon after you buy it. Look on the internet to see which issues are common for the make and model of car you want to buy. Understand how much it costs to put those issues right, if the car you look at is cheap but needs repairing you can work out the true cost of buying that car. If you choose a popular make and model repairs can be far cheaper than you might think. This is largely because you can easily buy parts from breakers yards, but remember to factor in the cost of labour.

Make sure that you test drive a high mileage car thoroughly. Take it on all types of roads and take it far enough for the engine to heat up completely. Check the fluid levels; look in particular for fluid leaks, rust and for water ingress. Pay attention to exhaust emissions too if there is dark or white smoke coming out of it the car is unlikely to pass its next MOT.

To encourage people to buy high mileage cars, some dealers will offer a warranty with the car. This is a good thing, but you need to carefully check the terms and conditions, often these warranties are shorter than normal. To keep your high mileage car running smoothly you will have to continue to have the car fully serviced, ideally by a dealer.
