Himalaya - the landmark of the earth, is the most renowned as well as the most beautiful mountains in the planet. The Himalayan ranges are the youngest and the highest in the whole world, that dates back to the era of Jurassic Park, before 80 millions year. These broad ranges primarily cover the lands of India, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet.
Major Mountain Ranges of Himalaya:
Pir Panjal Range: Pir Panjal Range lies in the middle Himalayas, at an average altitude of 5,000 meter. From east south-east to west north-west it runs along the Indian states of Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Pakistani administered Kashmir. From Gulmarg in the north-west, it goes across southern rim of Kashmir valley to the Banihal pass. Here Pir Panjal separates Kashmir valley from Warvan valley by a ridge line.
The eastern Pir panjal connects Manali in the Kullu valley to Keylong in the Lahaul valley via Rohtang La mountain pass. The magnificent hill station Gulmarg of Jammu & Kashmir lies in this range.
Dhaula Dhar Range: Dhaula Dhar Range lies to the south of Pir Panjal. It is a southern wing of the main outer Himalaya mountains, which can easily be made out with its snowy ridge. The range separates Ravi valley from Beas valley, while in the west it makes division between Chenab valley and Tawi valley. The range is extremely rocky and full of granite, that contains a huge amount of slate stone.
The highest peak of the range is ''Hanuman Ji Ka Tiba'', which is also called 'White Mountain' with its elevation around 5,639 meter. Dhaula Dhar range also contains several other peaks of about elevation 5,180 meter.
Zanskar Range: Zanskar Range is a well-known mountain range, nestled in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. Geographically Zanskar range is a part of Tethys Himalaya, that separates Zanskar (subdistrict) from Ladakh.
It is spread over an area of 7,000 sq km, at an average height of around 6,000 meter. The altitudes of Zanskar range varies from 3,500 m to 7,000 m. Here you may also find the rich flora and fauna. Its lower valleys contains the alpine and tundra species. In the wildlife of the range you may encounter several animals like bear, snow leopard, wolf, marmot, bharal, kiang, alpine ibex, goats, wild sheep and lammergeier. While the domestic animals found in the region are yak, dzo, horse, dog and sheep.
Ladakh Range: Ladakh range is an important unit of Trans Himalayan range, lies to the north of Leh. The range is best known for its panoramic beauty and culture. It separates Western Himalaya peaks from Tibetan plateau. Ladakh is renowned for its virgin barren beauty and snow-covered peaks.
The important passes of the range are Kardung La and Digar La, which lie to the north-east of Leh.
