Retaining Walls essentially act as barriers to soil that would otherwise slide downwards and create a slope. While these structures can be made with a variety of materials including old tires, your best bet is to use concrete or stone blocks that last long and don't buckle under pressure. Your landscaper would be the perfect person to advise you in this regard. There are four basic types of retaining walls used commonly:- 1. Gravity - These are the most basic type of retaining walls that depend on their own weight and mass to hold back the earth. They are usually short, no more than three to four feet and are wider and thicker at the bottom. Naturally, they need a lot of material to build. 2. Cantilever - If you need to build taller retaining walls, these are your best bet. These are usually thinner than gravity walls and have a base, so that they look like an inverted 'T'. The base has two functions; one, it prevents the structure from sliding away by covering a larger amount of ground, and two, the weight of the earth pressing down on it actually keeps the structure from tipping over. Since these are used in heavy-duty situations, they are usually reinforced with steel beams running through both the horizontal and vertical part of the structure. 3. Sheet Piling - These are built where there isn't enough space for the previous types of walls by driving metal or wood planks into the ground. How deep the planks will go depends of course on the type of soil and the weight of soil the structure needs to hold back, but usually they ratio is one part above the ground for every two parts buried. 4. Anchored - These can be built in any one of the aforementioned ways but have one additional feature; they are anchored to the soil they are holding back with the aid of cables for greater structural support. There needs to be a proper drainage system behind these structures to ensure collected groundwater does not add to the pressure and tilt or destroy the retaining wall.
