Hip Pain Causes Understanding the Problem

Did you used to enjoy physical activity and staying in shape, but now find that even the simplest moving or strength exercises cause you significant pain in your hip joints? Have you had to decline the invite to babysit your grandchildren just because your hips make it so painful to chase them, lift them up, or bend down to talk to them? Thousands of adults deal with hip pain on a regular basis without every realizing that they need to see their doctor. Hip pain causes can be very serious, and until you understand them and isolate which one is affecting you, it's impossible to formulate a treatment plan.

Before you can understand hip pain causes, you have to know a little bit about how the hip joint operates when it is healthy. The hip is known as a ball-in-socket joint, which means that the head of the thigh bone (also known as the femur) rotates in a socket, also referred to as the acetabulum, which is made up of several pelvic bones. It's important for patients and doctors alike to realize that while this unique joint is often the source of the hip pain, the surrounding bones and tissues can also contribute to serious discomfort.

In most cases, hip pain causes are directly related to some sort of joint trauma. This trauma can occur suddenly, as in the case of a fall down a set of stairs, or twisting the joint during exercise or a sports game. However, this pain can also be caused by deterioration or inflammation of the joint cartilage and surrounding muscle tissues. Along with pain, some patients might experience redness of the skin around the joint, swelling, stiffness, and warmth. These are all signs that something internal is irritating the joint.

Another unique characteristic of the hip joint is that it the socket is filled with a small amount of fluid so that the femoral head can glide around in the socket of the acetabulum smoothly. When an injury or illness occurs, the resulting inflammation can cause the joint to be filled with much more fluid than normal. This will stretch out the normally small hip capsule and result in significant pain for the patient. This same joint socket is also lined with cartilage, which is typically moist and assists the joint with smooth movement. When a disease, such as arthritis, attacks the cartilage, the movement becomes restricted and painful.
