The experience during the Assembly had, without doubt, the nature of an encounter with the Lord. I recall with pleasure, in particular, the two concelebrations solemn that I have presided in Saint Peter's Basilica for the opening and closing the conference. The contact with the Risen Lord, truly, really and substantially present in the Eucharist, the spiritual atmosphere which allowed all the Bishops of the Synod Assembly to see themselves not only as brothers in the Lord, but also as members of the College of Bishops, eager to follow, under the chairmanship of the Successor of Peter, in the footsteps of the Good Shepherd, serving the Church, a pilgrim in all regions of the continent. It was obvious to everyone the joy of participating in the Assembly, as they found an extraordinary moment of encounter with the Lord, with the Vicar of Christ, with many bishops, priests, consecrated persons and lay people from all parts of the continent.No doubt, some of the above factors contributed in but powerful way, to ensure this atmosphere of fraternal meeting of the Synod. First, there were the experiences of communion in the previous General Assemblies of Latin America in Rio de Janeiro (1955), Medellin (1968), Puebla (1979) and Santo Domingo (1992).
In them, the pastors of the Church in Latin America had been able to reflect together as brothers on the most urgent pastoral questions in that region of the continent.
