Fire extinguishers have been in existence for almost 200 years already. The first invention of the fire extinguishers was made by Ambrose Godfrey. His fire extinguisher was not yet portable which means that it must be placed inside a room. Ambrose Godfrey used a series of fuses in order to eliminate fire. As these fuses detonated an almost explosive charge, the liquid inside of the fire extinguisher then puts out the fire.

The first portable fire extinguisher was created in England by a man named George Manby. He first invented a device called Extincteur and was made using compressed air and at least three gallons of potassium carbonate. George Manby was the first one to device a gadget which extinguishes fire suppressants using compressed air inside a container. Having such an ingenious invention still guides modern manufacturers of fire extinguishers in further developing such fire fighting product. Having such an invention also made George Manby persistent in making the Extincteur a part of the national fire rescue service.

Aside from the portable fire extinguisher, George Manby also created a lot more fire preventive devices which could rescue people from burning buildings and even people who fell into ice water. A popular line created by George Manby was the Manby Motors, which generally helped rescue people from ships.

The idea of inventing a chemical fire extinguisher came from Francois Carlier in France. He achieved such invention by blending two substances to produce carbon dioxide which in turn is used in eliminating fire. These two substances which are acidic in nature mix with one another and form carbonic acid. Different systems have been invented in releasing the acid to further form the carbonic acid. In 1881, the US witnessed its first acid fire extinguisher when Almon Granger patented such invention.

Today a lot more types of fire extinguishers have been created for different specific purposes.
