History and Founding Of Neuro-Linguistic Programming Or NLP
Neuro-linguistic Programming, which is shortly termed as NLP, is a collective collaboration of many psychologists and linguists. Richard Bandler and John Grinder are considered as the two founders of NLP.
Richard Bandler was studying at the University of California. Once he was listening lectures of some psychotherapists and making selections from those taped lectures for his project. When he was listening to the taped lectures, Bandler noticed that a certain pattern of words what psychotherapists were using for conversation with their clients made acceptance of their suggestions easy to their clients rather than other patterns of words. Bandler took this problem to one of his university's professors, John Grinder who was a linguist, that why it was so that a certain pattern of words of psychotherapists was making their suggestions acceptable while the other words for the same suggestions were not as successful. They both sat together to study this problem and collected some points. Later on they took the help of a psychotherapist, Virginia Satir, for creating a model of words and suggestions for challenging the thoughts of their clients and pushing them to the limits so that they can accept their suggestions easily. The model what Bandler, Grinder and Virginia Satir created is now called the Meta-Model.
On the base of his practice, Bandler stated that human beings are programmable machines. In 1970's when the world was not as advance as it is now and people treated themselves as the crown of creation and not the machines, the term 'programming' was really a thought provoking term for people to accept. They started to ask questions about humans' being robot like machines in a challenging way. Since Neuro-linguistic Programming is about what works, rather than what should work, Bandler adopted his Meta Model technique of using a certain pattern of words for increasing acceptability percentage of his teachings. He stated that human beings are the only machines those can program themselves. In this way he said that on our own we can free our minds from boring tasks and hence we can make our surroundings more interesting by doing creative and new things.
In years after Bandler claimed that he is the 'only founder' of Neuro-linguistic Programming. In the opinion of psychotherapists, however, Neuro-linguistic Programming is a collective work of many people and the term Neuro-linguistic Programming in itself is a term generally developed for the techniques of this discipline of psychotherapy. However the NLP community or NLPers recognize Richard Bandler and John Grinder as the 'two founders of NLP'. The whole NLP community also recognizes the work of people who gathered around these two co-founders of Neuro-linguistic Programming.
