Hitchiking is thought by many names: thumbing

, autostop, thumbing up a ride, tramping or simply hitching. This is a method of traveling which might make a group of strangers come together and allow it to be safer for them to travel great distances across a country. Hitch-hiking across the European continent is often common.

Teenagers, young adults and perhaps older ones, get on the road, live nomadically and just explore what the world has to offer them. People have resorted to hitchiking because it is more economical and still brings them towards the places that they've been dreaming about since they were children. The want to hitchhike need to be done carefully; no one could be too careful these days. There isn't guaranteeing safety on the road when hitchiking, even if it is with a bunch, as the members within the group are strangers and nobody can really know their backgrounds.

There are chat sites where people can meet and discuss with one another about hitchiking plans. They write out their plans along with the schedules and itineraries so others who may hunt for companions themselves can join. Strangers is often strangers but traveling alone is plenty less safe than when traveling as a group. Visitors on the site can see the travel schedules of other hitchers plus they can contact them if and once they are interested. Even if it is not likely the safest method to travel, it remains a logical approach to communicate with others who may just be a traveling companion. They should use messenger applications like Skype so they might actually see the faces of those that they want to go with. Getting to be familiar with each other is best achieved through these messenger applications as one could see each other with the webcams.

Note: everytime there is a stop over at a spot, be certain to call and inform significant people of the whereabouts and the future plans. In case of an accident or worse, the information provided in every stopover is the only real chance for the authorities to find the group on the road.
