Hitting The Shops Straight After The Christmas Rush

The festive season can leave your belly full and your wallet empty

. Christmas is a wonderful time to spend with family and friends indulging in food, drink and presents. It represents a fun week of enjoyment following the stresses of everyday life over the previous twelve months. There is something magical about the giving and receiving of presents over Christmas that warms the heart. Seeing friends and family faces as they rip open your gift wrapping to reveal a present they have always wanted is a great feeling.

Christmas does not come cheap though and can severely dent the bank balance beyond repair. Add to this the fact that the country is in the midst of a recession and you can forgive households living close to the breadline for not cherishing the festive season as much as they used to. Disposable income is at a premium at present and has led to Christmas being cancelled in some families.

However, there are ways to make Christmas less of a strain on the finances. It is not a secret that high street stores and online retailers keep their prices high in the run up to Christmas. This period of high prices can start in November as businesses take advantage of the demand for gifts and stocking-fillers. Hyped-up prices can make keeping a tight rein on financial price-strings in and around the festive season an almost impossible task.

One tip for saving money is to get back online or down the shops straight after Christmas to bag huge bargains on gifts for the following year. As soon as Christmas Eve shopping is done, online retailers and high street stores begin dramatically slashing their prices. All stores are keen to offload excess gift stock left unsold, so they can start selling their new lines. Moreover, if you have understanding family and friends you could also ask them to wait until just after Christmas for their gifts and save a packet.

Getting out on the streets in the chaos of the sales may not be worth contemplating after a week of over-indulgence, but bypassing the queues by shopping online could save you a fortune for next Christmas. Traditionally, online retailers have lower overheads than high street stores and can offer gifts at a lower starting price. Therefore, in the sales they will be happy to sell their excess stock at next to cost price, just so they can revolve their stock and bring in new items.
