HIV and AIDS are really two different subjects, although they are irreversibly interconnected and the condition sets off with a person contracting HIV, Human immunodeficiency virus. The next stage of clinical latency is the stage where the virus attacks the immune system and the immune system generates antibodies. Because the body fights the infection, this stage may last up to 8 years without any specific symptoms if untreated. On being tested positive for HIV during the latent stage and starting to use antiviral drugs in early days, this stag e can be lengthened to 20 years or more before full blown AIDS develops. This is because antiviral drugs have the ability to slow down the rate at which HIV attacks the immune system. The anti bodies produced by the body shows up in HIV tests (ELIZA) and the greater the number of antibodies, they more HIV has set in. The next (and final)development stage is AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) where the immune system has been weakened to the point where the body is vulnerable to opportunistic infections, notably pneumonia and certain cancers.There is no treatment for AIDS and any treatment would be administered to overcome the acquired infection, for example pneumonia.

HIV -1 reportedly stemmed from the chimpanzee and is the form encountered world-wide. HIV -2 is localised to West Africa and is derived from another ape type. HIV AIDS is a so called lifestyle disease because it is mainly spread by unsafe sex practices between humans although HIV can also be spread from mother to child and blood transfusions where blood was infected. HIV can further be spread by the re-use of infected syringes and hypodermic needles.
