Hobby Tool Box
Think of a tool box, and you probably think of a mechanic or plumber. Why should they be the only ones with good stuff? Practically any popular hobby today uses specialized tools and you need a place to store them. There are many boxes available that will serve the purpose, but there is nothing quite like a wooden tool box. They go back to an era when craftsmanship mattered; you didn't just fling tools into a metal box, they were aligned in felt-lined drawers.
Today's hobby tools tend to be smaller than wrenches and hammers, and the hobby tool box reflects that. The drawers are generally not as tall, so the chest may either not be as tall, or have more drawers than a traditional tool box. A wooden hobby tool box doesn't need to be hidden, it can be prominently displayed in your project room. Say you are a painter, next to your easel is your hobby chest. Need a fan brush? Top drawer. Smaller fan? Right there. Sable 0/0? Second drawer with all the round ones. Various scrapers, mini-trowels, even tubes of paint? All laid out as you planned. Finding just the right tool is significantly easier when they are laid out in an orderly fashion; a creative spark is not lost by rummaging through a shoebox that mixes everything together as soon as you put it back.
Jewelry maker? Sewing/quilting? Sculptor of wood or clay? Scrapbooker? All your tools or other small items can be right at your fingertips. If you are like most people, you have more than one passion; you can keep your chalks and colored pencils above, your jewelry tools, wire and beads below; your embroidery threads and needles on the left, your crinkle cutters, stencils and embossing powders on the right.
Different styles of hobby tool boxes even break the drawers into compartments so you may have 2 or more drawers per level; a larger hobby chest may have wheels for ease of movement. Many have the capability to be stacked so you can build your own customizable chest to fit your particular needs.
A quality hobby tool box will be made from hardwood, not just veneers; interiors will also be wood, not fiberboard; many are designed so that when the top is closed, none of the drawers will open. Some lines carry metal corner guards and exposed latches ala navy sea chests. There are often different finishes available, or different woods. If your hobby involves full sized or heavier tools, there are of course hobby chests that will support them. Drawers will usually have metal hardware to support the drawers and ease the movement. The drawers are of course larger, and many of these items are on wheels for ease of transport.
Using a wooden tool chest for your hobby tool box will make all your projects seem more inspired, your tools seem more like heirlooms, and your project room will have a beautiful, functional and emotionally warm piece of furniture; a quality piece that will be more than worth its investment price.
