For many people it takes years of saving to purchase the home of their dreams

The best pieces of furniture one can buy are pieces that serve multiple functions. Start with the bed. The bed can be more than just a place to sleep; if you choose the right model it can also serve as a storage space. Opt for a platform bed with drawers on either side. This will make up for lack of closet space or room for oversized dressers. Consider adding a headboard that also contains shelving, perfect for storing books, nicknacks, and other odds and ends. If a platform bed is too expensive, choose a bed frame that allows under-the-bed storage containers. Compensate for less than ideal closet room with over-the-door racks and closest organizers.

Another lifesaving style of home furniture is the ottoman--storage items will come in handy when you need a spot for extra blankets and throw pillows. Take the ottoman one step further and purchase an oversized ottoman that can double as a coffee or end table. Place a piece of glass over it and voila! Instant table and you have just eliminated an extra piece of home furniture.

The bathroom is always the biggest challenge of the home. If only everyone could fit a jacuzzi tub and a shower stall, but the truth is for some of us it is hard to fit even all of the bare essentials. The easiest way to compensate for lost space is to think vertically. Install floating shelves and cabinetry on the walls. Stands and cabinets that fit over the toilet and over-the-door racks are great additions too to store all of your toiletries.

Thinking vertically is a smart idea for the entire home. Built-in wall units and floating shelves work well in just about every room. Choose home furniture that is taller than it is wide. It might be a bit of a nuisance for the vertically challenged, but you will save a substantial amount of wall and floor space.

Only have a kitchen and not a dining room? There is no need to eat on your bed or on the floor. Bistro and small dinette sets are both great choices. Consider small kitchen islands that can be pushed up against the wall and purchase two small counter stools. Kitchen islands with wheels can be easily moved around so as to be out of the way while cooking.
