Water conservation is a very worthwhile home improvement project as it not only saves on the planet's natural resource, water, it cuts your water bill

. You will have more money for remodeling if you can save on your water bill. The following are suggestions for conserving water.

Necessary items for these simple projects:

Depending on the number of toilets that are in your home you will need one or possible two jugs that are made of think plastic and a gallon size. For each shower in your home, you'll need energy saving shower heads. Changing these will require either a wrench or some pliers.

Toilet water conservation

Every time your toilet is flushed it will use anywhere between three and five gallons of water. In order to lower the water it takes, the gallon jugs will displace the water in the tank reservoir. Fill your plastic jugs with water and put as many as will fit into the tank of your toilet. It's that simple. It will prevent the tank from filling completely and saves water.

Be sure not to interfere with the flushing mechanism. If you prefer, you can use bricks instead of jugs to displace the tank water. The plastic has to be thick. If the plastic is too thin it will dissolve over time.

Showering

Hardware stores now carry shower heads that are designed to conserve on water usage. These shower heads will make a difference on the water bill. You will have options on which would be best for your home.

You can remove the old shower head with pliers, usually like a screw. Turning the new fixture to the right should get it up and working. Just make sure that the new seal that comes with the new fixture is in properly in place. Leaks use up a lot of water.

Leaks?

A tiny leak can make a lot of wasted water. Replace or fix a leak as soon as you notice it. It's often just an old gasket. If you have an unrepaired leak, you bill will suffer.
