Home Jewelry Cleaning 101
Four of the most common types of jewelry you probably have at home are diamonds, silver, platinum, and gold. Although they may be expensive and high in quality, that shouldn't stop you from learning how to clean them by yourself. Follow the simple but useful guide below that talks about the basics of home jewelry cleaning.
Before you proceed with cleaning your jewelry, it would save you time and energy if you separate different types of jewelry first. Your diamond jewelries should be separated from the rest since they are the hardest to clean. Do the same thing with your silver, gold, and platinum jewelries as well. The procedure to follow should be - finish one set of jewelry first before getting into the next set.
Diamonds and other jewelries made of hard stones should be cleaned first. A strong solution is needed for these types of jewelry so what you need to do is to mix one part of ammonia to three parts of water. Put in a few drops of dishwashing soap to complete the solution. When cleaning the diamonds, dip a small brush in the solution and gently scrub each piece of jewelry. When you are done, let the pieces dry and then store them in a safe place.
Proceeding to the next set, which is silver, create a mild solution of baking soda and water. This should make a good cleaning paste. Rub the paste on the silver to remove tarnish. A different solution is needed for silver covered with heavy tarnish. This time, you will again need the help of ammonia (only a little amount) mixed with warm water and dishwashing soap. After cleaning the silver, dry them with a pliable cloth and put them away.
Unlike silver, gold and platinum do not tarnish, making it easier for them to be cleaned and polished. This time, there is no need for ammonia, and a solution made of water and dishwashing soap will do. Use a soft brush dipped with the solution you made and gently polish the gold or platinum with it.
Diamonds along with silver, platinum, and gold are easy and safe to clean by yourself and without the help of a jeweler. What you should be careful of, however, are stones that are considered antique and unique. Some of these stones may not be safe topolish at home so make sure you take them to a professional jeweler if you want them cleaned.
