Home Nursing Rancho Santa Fe - How To Help Aging Seniors Have A Great Holiday Season
As the holiday season nears, it's time again to think of family and friends
. The holiday season is usually a time to think about giving; this year, think about how you can help aging seniors to have a happy holiday season. Here are a few tips to get you started bringing holiday cheer to older family and friends:
1 - Talk about old memories and make new ones - Older people tend to like reliving the "good old days". Listen attentively to stories of Christmas past and ask questions that allow them to explain further. After they're done telling a story, ask them if they'd like to do anything this year and help them to create a memory of right now.
2 - Involve seniors in getting ready for the holidays - Everyone likes to be made to feel important and seniors are no different. Let them be a part of holiday preparation according to their ability and interests. If your grandmother can still bake the pumpkin pie she makes every Thanksgiving, by all means suggest she do it again. Giving older people something to do makes them feel needed and gets the work done that much quicker!
When having aging persons help, make sure to maintain a safe environment. With all the cords and extra pieces lying around, it can be easy to slip. That's just one of the reasons it's important to make sure that older people can get around safely.
3 - Try to stick to their schedule - Many older people have a strict schedule and are left out of holiday festivities because events happen at times they are uncomfortable with. If you stick to their schedules they will be more likely to participate. For example, having events during the morning and afternoon hours is a wonderful idea if you hope to attract aging seniors.
Because the holidays can be so hectic and schedules can be disrupted, be sure to monitor seniors' medication intake. Not taking medicine can lead to serious health problems. Ask them if they've taken all their medicine and remind them to take it as well, if you can.
4 - Keep it small and intimate - Older people can be somewhat uncomfortable in noisy situations with a lot of people. Try having smaller get-togethers with less people. They will be more likely to attend and more likely to open up and relax into a party atmosphere.
5 - Contact them after the holiday - The best thing you can do for a senior during the holidays is to make sure that you won't forget them after the holidays. Keep in touch with them and try to get them out of the house now and then. Having open lines of communication is especially important during the winter months when suicide rates rise for the elderly. Be aware of any signs of depression and make sure you call regularly to see how they are doing.
The holidays can be a fun time for everyone, seniors included. Keep these tips in mind so that you can brighten the lives of a few aging seniors and everyone can enjoy the holiday season together. Need help finding Home Nursing Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas. Give us a call
