Home Security is a Consideration on Campus Too

Security is an every day fact of life that everyone has to deal with, or face the consequences. Home security also extends beyond the home to essentially wherever you're living. It becomes especially important for new college students who are living away from home for the first time in their lives. It is better that they get some practical down to earth advice rather than having to learn life's security lessons the hard way. Whether they live on campus in the dorms, or off campus in an apartment, they would be wise to follow a few key recommendations.

If they live in the dorms, the school will most likely enforce key card access after a certain time at night, most likely using the student's school ID as the key card itself. Even during the daytime, almost every reputable campus will have security at the entrance to the dorm hall that checks everyone's ID as they enter. This may be automated or controlled by a human security officer. Either way, if the person does not show a valid school ID, they will not be allowed inside. This situation is even more effective when the ID is checked against a current school database. This is a great home security measure to filter out any criminals that might try to pose as a student of the school just to infiltrate the dorm halls to perform illegal activities.

Sometimes a guest is permitted inside the dorms for a visit. It is up to the student to ensure that this guest is trustworthy, not only for their own safety, but for the safety of everyone else in the dorms. If you fall asleep while your shady friend stays awake for example, you need to have ultimate trust that your friend won't do any criminal activities.

A student should never let strangers into the building. Sometimes, at certain times of the day or for certain entrances, security personnel might not be available to monitor incoming traffic. Instead, only key card access may be required. A stranger you've never seen before may ask you to hold the door open for him. It's probably best that you ignore that request unless you recognize the person. There are a lot of people in the dorms and a criminal might try to slip through the cracks. The key card home security feature only works if students don't let strangers into the building.

What about if a student lives off campus? Their greatest home security asset might be a home alarm system. When they're inside and the system is activated, they'll be able to sleep easy at night knowing that they're safe from all outsiders trying to harm them or take their belongings. When they're away from the apartment, they won't have to worry if all their expensive electronics will still be there when they get back. The security system will have their back. It might even be safer to live off campus when such a security system is in place. Because then you only have to make sure you activate it while you sleep and when you're away at school. You won't have to worry about whether other students are letting strangers into the building. You'll be in safe hands with such a security system.
