Home Water Filters Which Is Best For You?

Everybody knows that our lives depend on water

, we need water to drink and water to feed the animals and crops which supply our food. But when our water supplies are becoming increasingly contaminated by harmful chemicals and disease causing pathogens what can we do?

Our tap water has been found to contain over 200 contaminants and more and more are being added each year. It is estimated that over 10 million kilograms of chemical weed killers, fertilizers and pesticides will be used on domestic gardens this year alone, a lot of which may find its way into our groundwater supply. This isnt even taking into account industrial and agricultural uses so it is quite a scary prospect of just how polluted our water supplies may be becoming.

There have been numerous studies that show that consumption of the chemicals found in our water to be linked with disease, illness and cancers. Chemicals such as Chlorine, Bromate, Fluoride and metals such as Lead, Mercury and Arsenic are just a few of the things found in our drinking water.

Even small amounts of lead consumed over a long period of time can have accumulative effects and is known to cause mental retardation, brain and kidney damage among other things. Chlorine is added to our water to kill bacteria but is also recognised as a cancer causing carcinogen. Not only that but if hot chlorinated water is mixed with detergents containing triclosan, an anti-bacterial additive, the steam released may contain not only chlorine but chloroform and harmful dioxins. Contrary to what the public might have been told fluoride does not prevent tooth decay. Instead it hardens tooth enamel but in the process can make teeth brittle and mottled, commonly known as fluorosis. Fluoride is also linked to cancer, Down syndrome, skin irritations and heart problems and this just scratches the surface of the potential harmful contaminants in our drinking water.

There are many different water filtration methods used today but the most efficient and convenient for home use are carbon filters, distillation and Reverse Osmosis.

Whole house carbon filters treat all water entering a house and they do a good job at removing chlorine, reducing odours and improving taste but do not remove many pesticides and organic bacterias. Pre and post filters may need changing every few months and the main filter will need changing about every 2 years. There may be a substantial cost to change the main filter as it usually needs to be done professionally.

Distillation systems boil water and condense the steam which is then collected in a tank. When used with a pre carbon filter this is a highly effective filtration method removing nitrate, fluoride, bacteria, pathogens, pesticides and virtually all heavy metals. Some people do say they dislike the taste of distilled water but you can add mineral drops to improve the taste. Filters must be changed every 3 or so months depending on usage. Distillation machines can be expensive and for every litre of distilled water produced another litre may be flushed as waste so it isnt the most efficient system on the market either.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a process by where water is forced through a selective membrane which does not allow 99% of contaminants to pass through. Reverse osmosis removes heavy metals, fluoride, chlorine, pesticides, nitrates and virtually all other unwanted harmful substances. The units are store under the sink with a tank connected to its own tap on the counter or sink making them easy and convenient to use. The 5 stage RO system, using pre and post carbon filters, is considered the only complete home filter system and is also the only filtration method that is capable of desalinating sea water making it safe to drink. Filter cartridges may need changing every 12 months or so but are fairly inexpensive and easy to install.
