Home Wind Mill Kit - 2 Reasons It Might Not Be Right For You
Looking into sources of renewable energy is the right thing to be doing now and the
home wind turbine kit is probably the best single thing you can be investigating. That is because they are a form of passive energy that just works for you in the background whether you do anything to help it along or not.
Here are the 3 reasons, though, a system like this might not be right for you or for your home:
You don't have enough wind on your property - not everyone has enough wind on their property to justify a home wind turbine kit. The reason is there may be very strong wind at times but over a long period of time there is not enough average wind to make it work. The only really way to check that out is to get an anemometer - which is just a small wind turbine - and put it up for you might install the real wind device. Let it run for a while and then assess what your average speed. 9 mph is the gold standard. If you're over that you definitely have a project worth pursuing.
Your neighborhood won't allow it - in many communities wind turbines are either not allowed or heavily restricted. That is because of danger to migrating birds or because of the noise that the wind device produces. Sometimes, restrictions come in the form of a setback from your neighbor's property. Or, they can be driven by the height of the turbine as well. The FAA sets is a limit of 200 feet the maximum that you can install a wind device.
While wind generators for the home are not for everybody right now, they will be more than likely one day. The reason I say that is the biggest limitation now is cut-in speeds and the cost of the wind turbine. (Cut-in speeds are the minimum velocity of the wind that will begin turning the turbine.)
As more and more wind turbines get placed out in the field though the prices will come down and they will be affordable on much broader basis even with super-low cut-in speeds. That's when our tolerance for wind turbines will go way, way up. Meeting the neighbors will complain will install one because it will be seen as a gesture towards the broader economic interest and no longer just an annoying hassle.
If the home wind turbine kit is a non-starter for you that doesn't mean that you can't have a renewable energy project. It just means you need to look elsewhere, like at solar and at geothermal energy as sources.
