Sensitivity to pain is the most marked characteristic feature of Chamomilla

. Wherever the pain is and whatever its cause, it is completely unbearable. It enrages the sufferer and nothing can pacify her. Chamomilla, is also probably the most irritable remedy in the Materia Medica. She is irritable because nothing is right: whatever you do for her it won't be the right thing. She is easily offended, becomes melancholy and refuses to reply when spoken to. She is irritable if spoken to or looked at. She is angry and irritable with or because of pain. A lot of complaints are caused by or associated with anger. She is extremely restless with anger and pain, paces about to relieve it.

The uninhibited expression of anger and pain is more likely to be seen to its fullest extent in children and so this remedy is highly indicated in many children's complaints (see chapter 8). However, it may also be indicated for adults driven beyond normal restraint by the intensity of their pain. It can often be helpful in gynaecological conditions, where pain is frequently unbearable. The woman's breasts can be very tender and the nipples inflamed. She will be irritable before periods. She may have severe pain during a period, haemorrhages of dark blood with labour-like pains. It may be indicated in threatened miscarriage if there is unbearable pain from the back to the middle of the thighs. It is useful for the severe pains of labour..

When there is pain in the muscles and joints the pains drive the sufferer from the bed to walk the floor; she is thirsty, hot and beside herself with anguish. She may have cramps in the legs. She has very little appetite but there may be a craving for or aversion to coffee or narcotics. There is a marked thirst for cold water, desire for acid drinks. The sufferer is prone to attacks of severe vomiting with retching; she is bilious from anger. She may have slimy diarrhoea. Sleep is characteristically disturbed and restless. Nightmares are common. She is inclined to get hot in bed, throw the bedclothes off and stick her feet out. She sweats easily and is better for sweat. She is extremely sensitive to wind, chill from cold damp air and cold,

Better:

Being carried, or riding in the car, heat (except toothache), warm humid weather.

Worse:

Draughts, wind, wet, getting angry, 9 p.m. to midnight, coffee, narcotics, before and during periods.

Chamomilla is needed by people who are excitable and hypersensitive both physically and emotionally. They are extremely sensitive to pain which is intolerable. They are also easily offended, irritable, angry and quarrelsome. Restlessness, temper tantrums and rage are prominent in its picture. They are better for being carried, worse night, 9 p.m.-midnight. They are strongly affected by wind and cold. The remedy may be indicated in the following conditions: colic, earache, food sensitivity, labour pains, period pain, muscle and joint pains, sciatica, teething, toothache.
