I dropped in to see one of my pals the other day he paints yachts on the French Riviera, and discovered that he also custom paints motorcycles. Little did I know, but he had one of the most desirable bikes on the planet in his workshop a Honda RC45. This bike would be about third on my list of bikes I would buy if I had unlimited funds.

Originally built for homologation into the World Superbike Championships, the RC45 is a 750cc V- 4 which was ultimately replaced by the 1,000 RC51. Give me the V-4 anyday. Having watched Joey Dunlop and Carl Fogarty destroy the opposition in the Isle of Man TT on the predecessor, the RC30, I always had a soft spot for Honda's vee fours. Jim Moody managed a lap of the IOM TT course in 18 minutes 11.4 seconds - from a standing start over 124 mph average speed. Insane. The RC45 was basically a revamped RC30 with fuel injection, but they never quite hit the spot in WSBK. Despite being the almost perfect bike, it only won one World Superbike Championship. Mostly down to the extra 250cc displacement advantage given to twins, and after several years of struggling, Honda eventually caved and switched to twins
There were only ever 200 of these things built and most of them ended up on the racetrack. 50 went to the US as per the AMA regs, the rest to Europe, and there are very few left. Needless to say I was a little surprised to find a mint example that had been repainted at Riviera Reflections' workshop. That is a photo of her at the top of the page. Bog standard HRC colors perfection as far as I am concerned. I know wher I will be getting mycustom motorcycle paint in France done next time I throw my bike up the road.

The RC45 has a long pedigree going back to the original VF750s. As with many Honda's a lot of development work was done on the track and this always reflected well in the bike's handling on the road. Considered by many to be the ultimate series of bikes, the RC45 represents the culmination of nearly 20 years development. I agree with Honda 90 degree V4 engines are the perfect set up. Of course, the politics involved in bike racing meant Ducati's pressure to allow a displacement advantage to the lighter twins meant eventually scrapping the design for WSBK. Properly tuned, the RC45 puts out around 190-horse power in racing trim. They were insanely expensive when they were released, and I wouldn't even want to guess what this one is worth. Sure is pretty though.
