Horse Flies And How To Help Your Horse

The long winter is finally over and the great British weather has arrived

, but then there lies a problem. The dreaded horse flies!

Horse flies are so irritating to our poor horses that the summer is usually full of dread for all horse owners. However help is at hand.

There is a variety of helpful hints and tips around to help us. From tales at the stable yards to horse owners searching the world wide web for any solution that can be found.

My basic thoughts are this:

1. Use a quality horse fly spray but remember not to overspray your horse with fly sprays. If you find you need to reapply the fly spray, wipe him down with a damp towel first before re-applying. This will help prevent build up.

2. Use a good durable fly sheet (not the cheapest one you find)

3. If the problem persists look into using a lightweight turnout rug with a fly mask

These 3 simple solutions should help you in every instance. I hope.

However there area variety of natural and herbal (old wives tales) availableto use with various success rates:

Garlic. This has several benefits and it is not surprising that it is the most commonly used herb for horses. It can help in maintaining a clear respiratory system. Many people have discovered that Garlic acts as a hugely effective natural fly repellent, helping reduce the use of chemical sprays. (which can be so nasty these days.)

Good Preparation. In the spring you can prepare your horse for the summer's flies by building up the body's defences with flax oil and a good mineral supplement.also a great tip is to add a little black salt as this may help with the general skin comfort.

But if all else fails there is always the good old faithful movement option. You can try and move your love to a better location away from fields with river banks and general water sodden plains. This is sometimes easier said than done and will not remove the problem all together but make your horse'slife a little easier.
