The truth is that it is very difficult to make a living from it and it is extremely risky. Though you may have some luck when you start betting on horse races, luck comes and goes like the wind.

Therefore, consider these horse racing tips as a suggestion for recreation and entertainment. Now let's get started. Every horse race has a favorite. That is the horse that the most money is bet on, also called the chalk. It will consequently have the lowest odds on the tote board. Since that is the horse that has the most money on it, it is also the one most likely to win. Does the horse realize that a lot of people have risked their little all on it and therefore tries the hardest? No, of course not. Then why do the favorites win about a third of the time, more than any other single horse in the race?

They win the most often because they are in the best form, have the most class, and are the fastest based on their recent efforts. That is why so many people backed that one. Therefore, when you decide to bet on a horse race, your first consideration should be, how good is the favorite and does it make sense to put my money on that one to win? The problem, you see, is that though they win a lot of races, they usually don't pay enough to make it worthwhile. For instance, if they win about a third of the time, and the odds are 3-2, that means if the horse wins for every two dollars you've wagered you will get back $5. If you have to bet three races at $2 each to get $5, you're losing a dollar on the deal.

I recommend that you bet a few favorites during the day, but do so on the later races or races with the higher purse value. Statistically, the favorites in these races win a little more often. I also recommend that you stick to odds of less than 5-1 on any horse you bet on because they win much more often than horse at over 5-1. If you keep your bets on the horses you have been identified by the crowd as having a chance, then you'll usually cash a few tickets during the day and may even make a profit.

That is a lot more fun than backing long shots (horses whose odds are over 6-1) and losing race after race.
