Hospital Vs Nursing Home Cna: 3 Things You Need To Know

You may have just completed your Certified Nurse's Assistant (CNA) training and certification

exam and are ready to embark on a noble and rewarding profession. The dilemma for you could be which kind of medical facility to work in: a hospital, or a long-term facility like a rehab center or nursing/senior citizen home. There is not much difference by way of job description in either kind of facility.

*Hospital CNA

A hospital CNA's duties on a daily basis includes testing patients' blood pressure, keeping track of their temperature, checking vital signs, making sure the patient gets food and drink, helping them to use the bed pan, keeping the patient clean and changing bet sheets. There are many departments in a hospital, including the emergency room and intensive care, and CNAs may be assigned to any one of them. You will be supervised by a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and will have to take care of your patient based on his or her individual health needs. You will also have report to the RN or LPN on the patient's progress and the care you provided on a daily basis.

*Nursing home CNA

Daily duties for a CNA in a nursing home or long-term facility are much the same as the ones in a hospital. Here too, you will have to help patients use the toilet, help them to bathe, dress, eat, change their bed clothes and so on. The difference here is that inmates of these facilities are there for long periods of time, some as residents, and your duties will be based on a daily routine.

*Advantages and disadvantages

In a hospital, patients come and go at a more frequent pace. This means you will deal with a lot of patients with different needs. Because of the number of patients you come in contact with, you learn about different areas of medicine which will help you to decide which course you want to follow should you decide to join nursing school. CNAs in hospitals also get to carry out more medical procedures than their counterparts in nursing homes who take care of the same patients daily. Though the hospital job is more stressful, nursing homes tend to pay better.

At the end of the day, whether you start off in a hospital or a nursing home, a CNAs job is rewarding and exciting and will give you a lot of options going forward in the nursing profession.
