Hosted Fax Solutions
The business world is caught in the technological storm of electronic fax exchange
. Not only has this meant paperless fax transactions, but also increased security of the electronically exchanged faxes. As the faxes arrive directly into the configured MS Outlook inbox or a similar mail client, the problem of misplaced or lost faxes has also reduced dramatically. When thousands of fax need to be exchanged monthly,
hosted fax solutions help keep the exchange easy, simple and efficient.
How does this technology work? What converts your PC or mobile phone into an easy to use to fax machine?
SIP or the session initiation protocol is primarily responsible for the ease of electronic fax exchange. A
sip fax server uses VoIP signals within an IP network to establish a successful communication of content between two devices. While this sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. What sip essentially does is initiate or open the lines for communication between two devices. It has nothing to do with the type of communication exchanged or the format in which this communication is exchanged.
A fax communication established over a
fax server sip is flexible and adapts to a wide range of exchange solutions. As sip is used to initiate, terminate and modify communication and communication channels it has proven to be a reliable source of data exchange. In function it is similar to a web exchange happening over a http or smtp server.
Fax exchange with sip
Here is a brief insight into understanding what happens when you are exchanging faxes electronically. When you dial in to the toll free number provided by your fax service provider the call is directed to a unified messaging or UM as an invite with a voice SDP profile. The UM could be either be another phone or another IP address. The UM accepts this invite and opens a line of communication with the other device. Once this circuit has been completed the line is now open to a fax transmission. Here is where the sip plays a very critical role. It now identifies the fax calling tone or the CNG. It goes back the UM with a re-invite. Only this time it includes a t.38 or G.711 profile in the SDP, letting the UM know that there is more than just voice being exchanged via this communication line. The UM accepts the re-invite, but puts the sip peer on hold, while it communicates to the end peer who has to receive this transmission. The UM acts as the intermediate who introduces the sip peer to the end point. Once this has been done, sip sends an invite directly to the end peer to receive the fax transmission. The end peer accepts this invite and a fax communication is successfully established.
It is thanks to the simplicity and efficiency of sip, that fax exchanges have become mobile, while being secure. Sip fax servers have gained rapid popularity in the recent times and are being constantly explored to ease communication further.
