Hot Air Ballooning In Bristol

Bristol is a historical, diverse city with an estimated population of nearly 500

,000, which rises to nearly a million when including the population of the surrounding boroughs. Set on the river Avon, in the county of Gloucester, this area is a truly unique part of the world, with picturesque scenery, rolling hills and stunning architecture. The cathedral is huge tourist attraction and is nearly 900 years old.

Bristol has a rich history of ballooning, with the annual International Balloon Fiesta held in the area every year, attracting thousands of visitors. It is the largest ballooning event in Europe, with 250 trade stands and caterers as well as a host of other entertainment options. The city has more than its fair share of ballooning fanatics, and the Ashton Gate launch site is ideal for catching some stunning views of the city and surrounding areas. Set in the grounds of a regal mansion, the site offers immense scenery from the moment you get into the sky.

One of the most popular sights include the grade 1 listed Clifton suspension bridge, which is over 150 years old and is a fine example of the highly regarded engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunels work. The bridge took 33 years to build, and although Brunel was commissioned to build the bridge in 1831, when he was just 24 years old, he did not live to see the completion of the project, as work was completed 5 years after his death in 1864. The bridge remains a tribute to his incredible engineering prowess and was opened as a memorial to his life.

But the Clifton suspension bridge isnt the only example of Brunels work in Bristol. Should the wind take you over the Harbourside area, the fully restored SS Great Britain awaits you. The steam-liner was the forerunner of modern passenger liners, and has travelled thousands of miles, having taken regular voyages to Australia and the United States. Bristols Temple Meads railway station is a yet another great example of Brunels influence on the city.

For those lucky to drift above Bristol Zoo, theres a host of exotic animals that you can view from the sky. You could catch a glimpse of the gorilla, Asiatic lions, pygmy hippos, red pandas and much, much more. Even if the animals arent visible, the zoo is a spectacle in its own right - the whole area is beautifully landscaped and filled with delightful foliage that can be admired from a great distance.

The city itself is a sight to behold. Ancient intertwining streets, beautiful architecture and an attractive harbour make this city one of the most beautiful of the British Isles. Brunels influence on the city makes it a truly unique spectacle. Wherever the wind takes you, youre guaranteed to view some incredible sights that will linger in the memory long after you touch down back to earth.
