Hot Flushes

These may well respond to one of the following on a short term basis

, Belladonna where the face will be very red and hot, even throbbing. The woman will be restless, agitated and probably have palpitations as well. Lachesis will have sweating with flushing and will often have violent headaches with it. PuIsatilla may be indicated for milder hot flushes, probably brought on by being in a hot place. The rest of the body may be chilly and the woman may generally be tearful. Sulphur where shivering precedes the hot flushes and there is a feint sensation at the same time.

Heavy Bleeding The most frightening physical symptom of the menopause is undoubtedly that of heavy bleeding, even flooding or haemorrhaging. Heavy bleeding is often caused by fibroids, little lumps of muscle cells, in the womb. These are harmless in themselves, though, as with all 'new growths' there is an outside chance that they could become malignant. The real danger is that they might cause serious haemorrhaging, or miscarriage in younger women.

They are often symptom less and usually shrink of their own accord after the menopause; if they cause a lot of trouble they may be modified, or even removed, by surgery. Heavy (and painful) bleeding may also be caused by endometriosis, excessive growth of the lining of the womb. There are many remedies which can be used to balance the system to reduce the general tendency to heavy bleeding: remedies such as China, Lachesis, Phosphorus and Sepia, where haemorrhage is a strong characteristic. In China and Phosphorus debility from loss of blood, fatigue and exhaustion would be marked! Lachesis and Sepia would struggle to continue their strenuous lifestyles and become depressed and bad tempered as a result.

Lachesis would characteristically feel better in herself once the flow was established, despite the heaviness. Sepia would show the characteristic bearing down, sagging sensation. Kali carb should be thought of where there is persistent heavy bleeding despite surgical or other intervention. Natrum mur may also have very heavy early periods (though they can also be scanty and delayed) at this time and will be likely to suffer from anaemia. In an emergency heavy bleeding may be controlled in its acute phase with one of the following: Belladonna^ where the blood is bright red and hot with clots; there will be general congestion, throbbing and restlessness.

China, where the period is early and very heavy, the blood will be black and clotted and its loss will be accompanied by exhaustion and vertigo. Ipecac, where there will be bright red blood accompanied by weakness, nausea and vomiting. In cases of such heavy bleeding you may need to take the indicated remedy every half hour or so.
