Hot Tub Popularity Worldwide

Hot tubs have been a fixture in human history across the globe for thousands of years

. While they are now most well-known in Canada and the United States, they are a traditional form of relaxation almost everywhere you go.

History of hot tubs

Ancient Europe and China both recorded heavy hot tub usage. In both cases, hot tubs were tubs of water heated with the stones from a fire. In Europe, Roman citizens had a hot bath once a week to get clean. In China, hot tubs were used specifically for relaxation. The great Chinese Emperor Xuanzong (r. 712-755 AD) was known for having a personal hot tub so large that his attendants used a boat to sail over it.

In the Middle Ages, Japan and the Middle East became the kings of the hot tub world. In Japan, the Ofuro wooden hot tubs were important for both family and social life. Family members would bathe and soak together every day. It was as much a part of life as eating at the same table.

In the Middle East, bathhouses with hot communal baths became massively important for social life. Hot tubs were the center of communities, where neighbors would meet and talk.

The 20th century

Many of these types of hot tubs continued to be used up until the modern day. However, they have been replaced in the media by modern hot tubs.

Evolution of the modern hot tub

Wooden hot tubs began to appear as luxury items in the 1910s and 20s, heated by gas or wood. They usually had only a few, low pressure jets, placed so they would not bother users.

In 1956, the Jacuzzi brothers patented the first hydrotherapy jets. After that, the sky was the limit. Hot tubs grew rapidly in popularity.

In the 1970s, wooden hot tubs began to feature prominently in movies about the decadent West Coast lifestyle. They also appeared more and more often in health clubs and spas, tied to the growing health movement.

Current worldwide popularity

Hot tubs are a luxury item, and the vast majority are owned by the comparatively rich. The American and Canadian upper middle class is the most powerful consumer demographic in history, and they tend to own most of the world"s hot tubs. However, hot tubs are also becoming more popular in European suburbs, and among the nouveau riche in China.

In addition, traditional hot tubs are seeing a resurgence around the world. Turkish bathhouses are popping up in every major city in the world. In Japan, Ofuro traditional hot tubs have seen a massive revival in rural areas.

Most hot tubs, even "traditional ones" are heated by electricity and gas. Gas is still the cheapest energy in the world, joule for joule. However, most experts think that this will change within twenty years. As gas drops, off, hot tub ownership will become more dependent on electricity, particularly wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear electricity. It is possible that as the world"s energy situation changes, many areas that currently do not use hot tubs will be able to afford them.
