Late check in of bags is the biggest cause for mishandling of bags says the airlines. Regardless of having flight connections on the same airline bags might still end up being nowhere to be found.

To people who will travel with a lot of expensive items it would be a good idea to get baggage insurance. Read the homeowner's insurance policy ahead of time before you waste money on an additional one. Occasionally, there are policies that will cover offpremise theft.
