It works by blocking the acid produce by your stomach.

How Omeprazole Works:

Omeprazole works by preventing the enzyme in your stomach wall to produce acid, thus decreasing the amount of acid to allow your esophagus and stomach to heal. This drug has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1989. You can find Omeprazole in the market under the brand names Zegerid and Prilosec.

Additionally, you can buy the drug over the counter in capsules in dosages of 10 milligrams, 20 milligrams, 40 milligrams and also in powder form for oral suspension. The recommended dose for people who have ulcers, erosive esophagitis and GERD is 20 milligram to 40 milligram daily. You can expect to see the healing benefits of Omeprazole within a month or two.

Contraindications:

If you want to get the maximum benefits of Omeprazole, take the drug before meals in its whole form. However, Omeprazole does not go well combined with other drugs such as diazepam, phenytoin and warfarin. This is because stomach acidity may affect the absorption of these drugs. Omeprazole, and other PPIs for that matter, reduces the absorption and concentration in the blood of ketoconazole while it creates the exact opposite reaction when combined with digoxin, thus increasing toxicity.

Side Effects:

If you are taking Omeprazole, you may or may not experience some of these side effects:

Cough

Dizziness

Back pain

Constipation

Vitamin B-12 deficiency

Unusual weakness

Tingling or numbness of the feet or hands

Sore tongue

Allergic reactions such as severe dizziness, difficulty in breathing, itching and rashes
