The world of celebrities is a strange one indeed

. There are those who are famous simply because they are incredibly talented or incredibly attractive actors. Perhaps they are washed up actors from 20 years ago, who were at the top of the pile when they were in their heyday, but are now nothing more than recovering substance abusers with eating disorders, who need to continue to fund their drug habits and frivolous lifestyles by earning money on reality shows and subsequent ventures. Or perhaps they are never-beens those who fancy themselves real actors but have realized the quickest and surest way to fame is by personal branding and securing oneself one's own reality show. Think of all the major celebrities today who were not even known until they had reality shows all of the women of the Hills, the Kardashian sisters, Jon and Kate Gosselin and their massive brood of children. Now every single one of these people is a millionaire and just as famous if not moreso than Angelina Jolie or Leonardo Dicaprio. They have mastered the art of personal branding, and they have largely used wireless Internet and their 4G cell phones to do it. Here is how.

1. They craft their online image.

Celebrities can establish their online image first by creating a website with lots of publicity photos. They can link to their work and post their personal writings, and their websites become rather like online resumes in a way. Now, if anyone ever looks them on a search engine, one of the first items to come up will be this carefully crafted online presentation.

2. They use Twitter.

This website started off in a way that made it seem like just another frivolous product of the age of wireless Internet. It seemed like just another way for narcissists with delusions of grandeur could talk to the people called their "followers". But now it has become a cultural force, if for no other reason than the fact that the mainstream media loves to report on the Tweets of famous people, including politicians. With this website, the new culture of Los Angeles celebrity can broadcast every minutiae of what is on their minds, and people across California and the United States as a whole just gobble it up. It is even better if one of these people says something controversial, or if they get into a flame war with another user.

3. They do or say something controversial, and make sure that it is caught on camera and uploaded onto the Internet, the sooner the better.

Celebrities like to feign shock, embarrassment, and a sense of victimization when footage of them is "released" that could be damaging to their images or reputations. But this is all an act they actually thrive on the attention and what better way to insert yourself into the constant news cycle of wireless Internet.
