How Color Evokes Emotion The Cool Colors
Blue
Blue
The color blue is the most frequently used color in advertising in the world. It is also one of the colors you see most often in life as the sky and water are both blue. Looking at the color blue typically leaves the viewer calm and comforted. Over time, blue has also become the color that represents dependability, loyalty and wisdom.
As a designer or graphic artist, you will find that some colors just fit some specific industries. What color do you think of when you read the words hot sauce? For most, the answer would be red or orange. What color do you think of when you read the words, lawn care? Most would say green. Well, different shades of blue have certain industries cornered as well.
When it comes to designing a website, an advertisement or a corporate identity for the medical industry, a light blue and a slightly greenish blue, close to a scrub blue are both very popular. These colors are soothing and make the viewer feel comforted while viewing your design. You will also see these colors in bedrooms as well as hospital rooms because of the calm, restful feelings it gives the viewer.
An electric blue is perfect for anything new, or modern, or technology related, but would work poorly in a medical industry design. You will see the neon blue on advertisements for televisions, telephones and DVD players. These products still want you to feel calm and comforted when making the purchase, because these products are typically more expensive. But also, dont underestimate the eye catching value of an electric or neon blue.
In recent years, the use of a darker navy blue, typically used with light grays and silver, are being used in military advertising. Marine uniforms are commonly known as dress blues, but most military dress uniforms incorporate some blue somewhere. Most police and security uniforms are also blue. This is likely due to its association to making you feel dependability and loyalty. It is also fairly common for politicians to wear a navy blue suit, with a white shirt and a red tie when on television to help build trust.
Blue can also be used to enhance human production. Recent studies have shown that people can achieve more in a blue room. Weight lifters have been proven to lift more, but all athletic activities are enhanced when played in blue surroundings.
Violet
Violet doesnt evoke the wide range of emotions and feelings that most of the other colors do. The purple color range is typically only used as a royal color that is associated with wealth, prosperity or to reflect a rich sophistication. The best example I can show is Crown Royal scotch. Not only do they use royal in the name of their premium product, they wrap the bottle in a violet sack.
Oddly enough, the other place you will see an overwhelming amount of purple is in the toys of little girls. Little girls love all shades of purple, so they will use everything from violet to pink when advertising and packaging toys for little girls.
As always, keep in mind the natural emotions that the colors you design with evoke. You dont ever want a red dominant color scheme when you design a website for a lawn care company. It is far easier to play to the emotions you want by changing your color scheme.
