How Comics And Graphic Novels Make The Cut To Survive The Century

For over 70 years, graphic novels and comic books are entertaining young and old alike

. The medium has begun to see substantial changes in the new digital age. The industry has matured and the characters tend to be more fully developed. In some ways, the characters and storylines took a step back to the 30s and 40s at a time when most of the characters were dark and violent; the villains word on the sociopathic and the hero's code wasn't always black and white.

Comic book universes became more cohesive as characters moved from one book to another in one sitting the overall story arcs. Ever since the arrival of writer Alan Moore into the comic and graphic novel universe, stories and subplots have become more sophisticated. the motion picture industry have taken notice of the increased complexity of comic book stories and characters; they have found new source material. Comics and non-comics fans alike are constantly turning to the movie adaptations with eager anticipation.

Highly creative movie making professionals have constantly botched the process of translating comics to the silver screen over the years. For some it is a matter of technology; it was not easy translating the unique fantasy and storytelling medium to celluloid. Many of the new directors, writers and designers had an intimate connection with comics and graphic novels; they knew the language and how to translate it. Oftentimes I was delighted at the films, despite the fact that I had a different version of what should have been done.

In today's world of comics and graphic novels heroes are born and often die in their own series. The demise doesn't usually last long by human standards, but in a comic book's life, years could have transpired. Like a good Stephen Spielberg film, these creators know how to tug the right strings that cause you to feel for the characters they're about to sacrifice. You are frustrated by the injustice of their death Evil may have temporarily triumphed over good in spite of the noble efforts of the survivors. The writers and artists seem to understand that like our real-life heroes; firefighters, EMTs and police officers, then heroes understood the risks and were willing to live with it daily. A sense of drama often pulls you in to the point at which you feel present at the tragedy. If someone was injured, either a scar or another feature was incorporated within the next comic book.

The costumes changed as well, the garish colors of tight spandex began to give way to the paramilitary tones and designs.

Aging has never been much of a factor in the comic book universe, it only matters when the writers need to try something creative. Quite often the characters look and feel is updated to conform to popular sentiment; the influence of blockbuster versions of themselves in the theaters will influence the editors and artists at the company. Apart from the most popular and enduring characters in the genre, many heroes and villains have made the costume change as a way of generating interest in their books. Some characters even have a selection of costumes to fit the occasion; like realistic battle gear, they will suit up to fit the situation at hand. So much has changed over the years that some characters are unrecognizable from their origin.

The medium have always managed to weather the storm of criticism neglect or even greed and politics. There's something fresh and vibrant about an industry that understands the need for change and flexibility in service of its market. The medium continues to attract an audience because of its flexibility and adaptability, that is why it will continue to survive. I had been enthralled as a young boy reading comic books in my bed. The material is every bit as captivating now that I'm an adult as they were back in the day of Bazooka bubblegum and Keds sneakers. One thing that stayed the same throughout my years of reading has been the boundless imagination and creativity of comic creators.
