How Do Couriers Decide How Much To Charge?

Courier companies can charge vastly different prices depending on where you're doing business

. For instance, a Chicago courier service might charge much more (or less) than a New York courier service. Despite the disparity, there are similarities in the ways that these companies arrive at the pricing for their products. Most courier companies use a variation of a standard type of formula which lets them know how much they should charge for their deliveries. The variations come as a result of either a desire for a higher profit margin, higher expenses in their area, or higher requirements for wages to their employees.

The first considerations that go into the pricing of a courier shipment are all of the expenditures that a courier company has to put out in order to move goods. Things like the vehicles that they are using, the fuel consumed, and the time of the drivers have to be calculated with an appropriate margin of profit so that the courier company knows that they are charging a profitable yet competitive price for their services.

They do this using something called a freight class. This is a class that is assigned to each shipment based on how large the product is that you're shipping, both size and weight, and how far the product is being shipped. That figure gives the courier enough information to infer all their costs based on what kind of vehicle will be required, and how much time the delivery will take. This will also be adjusted higher if there are any factors which are going to make the delivery more difficult, such as when shipping highly delicate, temperature sensitive or overweight deliveries.

The next thing that is going to affect how much a courier company charges you is how fast you want your product delivered. Every courier company has a great deal of options regarding the speed you want the deliveries made at. For instance, choosing an economy service that is going to save you money is going to mean that your delivery takes several days to arrive. You could choose instead to pay more for something like a same day service. Rush service, which is typically the most expensive kind, simply means that the company will make your delivery as fast as they possibly can.

Finally, the courier may add some surcharges and fees for special requests, such as making a pickup during a holiday, or not during business hours.
