How Do Saddle Staplers Work?

Being experts in the binding business, were often asked "How do saddle staplers work

?" First off, lets get one thing straight. Saddle staplers have absolutely nothing to do with horses or horseback riding. A saddle stapler is not what keeps the saddle from falling off the horse. However, it would be extremely entertaining to see what would happen to the poor fool, or Jersey Shore cast member, who tries to staple a horse.

While you wont find a saddle stapler in a stable, you will find them in print shops, publishing houses and the binderies of large corporations. Saddle staplers are a heavy duty type of binding equipment, (yes, staplers are classified as binding equipment) that is used bind booklets, pamphlets, brochures, magazines, manuals, catalogs or other folded print media by inserting staples along the fold of the spine.

Saddle staplers get their name because the print media hangs over each side of the stapler saddle-style on a V-shaped platform. This enables the stapler to quickly and efficiently attach the staples without damaging the materials. There are two different types of binding techniques that a saddle stapler can bind books or print media. The most popular technique is stapling 2 or 3 staples down the spine, as is commonly seen in magazines and pamphlets. The other method, used for larger documents or for materials that are heavier than paper, involves a stitcher-style saddle stapler which attaches spooled metal wire to the spine.

Using a saddle stapler is as easy as falling off a horse, especially if the saddle wasnt stapled on the horse correctly. The method of operation will vary, based on whether youre using a manual or electric saddle stapler. Regardless of the model, the process begins the same. Start by placing the stack of papers on the V-shaped "saddle" so that the fold of the spine is aligned with the binding area. Be sure to align the papers so that the staples or spool will be properly placed. Saddle staplers are built for heavy-duty work, so most models are able to accommodate a 40-50 sheet stack of papers, which equate to a 80-100 page book.

After the pages are properly aligned and positioned then youll pull down on the stapling lever if you are using a manual saddle stapler, or if youre using an electric saddle stapler youll press the activate button. Foot pedal switches are also available for electric saddle staplers. Foot pedals are highly recommended for their conveniences and for their ability of freeing up your hands to keep the spine in position for binding. Saddle staplers that apply staples will generally apply 2 to 3 staples in fixed intervals along the spine of the book. Stitchers will apply the coil to the length of the spine.

Two good examples of a staple-style saddler stapler are the Skrebba W115 (http://www.abcoffice.com/stapw115.htm) and the Staplex SS-45NHL (http://www.abcoffice.com/ss-45.htm) . The Skrebba W115 is a manual, lever action saddle stapler. Its a versatile saddle stapler that can be used in saddle mode or it can be adjusted to flat action mode, where the saddle is laid flat. The Skrebba W115 stapler has paper guides and a backstop so you can easily and accurately position your brochures, catalogs, magazines, newsletters or other stapling work.

The SS-45NHL Electric Saddle Stapler by Staplex is a foot pedal operated heavy-duty saddle stapler. It has a wide 10-inch saddle for oversized jobs and to make work placement simple and quick. It can staple anywhere from 2 sheets to 40 sheets of 20 lb bond paper.

A good example of a stitcher style saddle stapler is the BinderyMate II 405 (http://www.abcoffice.com/bm405.htm). This stitcher is able to bind a variety of documents, books and other materials that a standard staple binder may be unable to accommodate. The Bindery Mate II stitcher is capable of stapling a -inch stick of paper, which is usually about 60 sheets of standard copy paper. Thats a lot of sheet. Stitching takes just seconds and requires little maintenance. The Bindery Mate II can also do both flat and saddle stapling, taking just seconds to switch from one to another.

So stop horsing around go to ABC Office to learn more about these and other saddle staplers. You can find ABC Offices entire selection of office staplers here.
