How do Solar Panels Work -A solar cell is a device that can convert the energy contained in light into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. That is why a solar cell is also known as a photovoltaic cell. The term Photovoltaics is used to refer to technology and research connected to the practical use of solar cells while producing electricity using light, specifically sunlight. A module or a group of cells which are connected to each other electrically and put together in a frame are commonly referred to as a solar panel. These can be further arranged into larger solar arrays.
Each solar is made of special materials known as semiconductors like silicon, which is most commonly used. At the time when light comes into contact with the cell, a part of it is absorbed by the semiconductor material. The energy from the absorbed bit of light is then transmitted to the semiconductor material. The energy causes the electrons to become loose thus facilitating their free flow.
How do Solar Panels Work -Solar cells have more than one electric field that allows the electrons that are let loose following the energy absorption to move in a particular direction. The flow of electrons produces a current which can be channelized by placing metal contacts at the both the ends of the PV cell. The current thus generated can be harnessed for external use as is done in the case of energy produced from solar panels. The energy thus generated from solar cells is used to power calculators. This current along with the voltage of the cell, which is produced as a result of the integrated electric fields generates the power.

Based on their construction, photovoltaic panels can generate electricity from diverse frequencies of light. However, at the same time the entire range of sunlight cannot be utilized by the panels. At present, solar panels can achieve an efficiency or sunlight conversion rate of approximately 21% in case of commercial products.
