How Do You Become A Black Penguin?

Do you ever feel like your business is just the same as everybody else?Ever tried to distinguish yourself from your competitors?Is your company in the middle of the pack?Not the worst but not the best?What makes one companythe very best?And most importantwhat makes them stay the best?

Over the weekend I was reading the news and found an article about a Black Penguin in Fortuna Bay on the sub Antarctic island of South Georgia.Now out of all the animals in the world it can be argued that the Penguin is one of the hardest to tell one from the other, I mean they all look identical.There are actually scientists who have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to distinguish one penguin from another.Metal tagging, photographs, voice recognition and even spray painting numbers on the penguin's belliesall of these tactics have been used.Talk about a society where you feel just like everyone else.And yet every now and then you run into a situation where one person really stands out; like the black penguin.Like Dr. Allan Baker said at the University of Toronto, "Well that is astonishing, I've never ever seen that before. It's a one in a zillion kind of mutation somewhere. The animal has lost control of its pigmentation patterns."

Isn't that what we all really want?We want to stand out from the crowd; we all need to be Black Penguins.How would you like to be referred to as "one in a Zillion".I talked to several of my friends and business associates and we discussed what makes companies stand out.The following is a list of things that will help you make your company stand out from the crowd:

1-Passion- You must have passion about your product and company.The more you care about your product, the more people can tell you care, the more they will come back to you.The reason I buy my tires from the same place every time is not because they are the cheapest but because the guy that sells them to me, loves tires.I'm not kidding when he talks about tires his eyes light up like a kid in a candy store, he can tell you everything about tires, and I trust his opinion.

2-Service- you have all heard the rule but how many of us really obey? "The customers are always right, and when they are wrong, remember they are always right."Customers want to be listened to.It is better solve a problem and keep a client then to try and find a new one.

3-Quality- You have to let your clients know what to expect, if you oversell they will have problems!If you tell your client the quality to expect up front you will have a client for life.Remember people only have a problem with price if they can't see value in the product.

4-How good looking is your sales staff? Surprisingly this came up several times,but the fact is people like working with businesses that present themselves well.A couple of my friends joked about this but at the heart of the matter is the simple fact that the nicer you keep your establishment, and employees the more people will like to work with you.My business partner can tell you the gas stations with the cleanest bathrooms from Canada to Mexico, and those are the only ones where he will get gas!

As you can see it is really simple things that will set you apart as a leader in your industry.Make sure you take the time to sit down today and see where your business is coming short and start taking steps to improve those areas.Remember you can be the Black Penguin in your neck of the woods it just takes a little extra effort.
