Daily Insight from the Story ofThe Little Prince
What is really important to you in your life? When you look back over your life years in the future, what will really matter to you?
Many of the things lots of people consider important really aren't all that important.Countless issues that today seem so terribly important will have fallen by the wayside. They will have dropped out of your consciousness as if they had never existed.
The author ofThe Little Prince introduces us to the idea that some things in lifeare of real consequence, whereas other things we might think matter so very much have little relevance.
He calls these "matters of consequence."
Just how different real matters of consequence are from all the things we imagine to be of consequence is illustrated in the pilot's exchange with the Little Prince over the matter of why flowers sometimes have thorns.
The pilot, driven by anxious thought, is concerned with whether he can get his airplane back in the air before he runs out of water. In contrast the Little Prince is concerned about his relationship with a particular flower back on his own planet.
The Little Prince's questions are motivated by self-inquiry. He wants to know what he can do to best protect his flower. This is his loving heart in action.
All the questions he asks, because they come from his heart, he never gives up asking until he has his answer. He is rigorous in his self-inquiry and self-confrontation. He wants his actions to have truly positive benefits in the life of the one he cares for.
There's nothing wrong with the pilot wanting to get back in the air. It's what'sdrivinghim that's the problem. He's consumed with anxiety, all based in fear for his life.
With his thoughts in turmoil, he lacks the conscious awareness, the deep sense of presence, that can lead him to simple, straightforward solutions.
We are always so much more effective when we come from awareness, fully in the present moment, than when our actions stem from anxiety. It's the difference betweenflow andhard work.
The pilot really has nothing to worry about if he will simply allow his inner being to direct him. If he lets his mind run him, then he'll have plenty to worry about!
Coming from presence, which is a fully conscious state, is like day and night compared with the limited power of thinking.
The story is teaching us that what matters iswhat's going on inside us. Is heart connection our focus, or the external world?
Through this story we are slowly going to learn all about the importance of coming from within.
It's not that we don't have to be practical in life. Indeed we do. But the real issue is where we are coming from.
Are we motivated from the divine presence that is our essence, like little children are? Or like most grown-ups, do we act more from the way we have been programmed while growing up?
How doyou decide what's truly important to you? How do you know which direction to go when you are faced with options?
Matters of consequence always originate with theheart, never with thought. Because of this they have real substance, not just outward form. Thus they are what can really make a difference in the quality of our lifea topic to be continued tomorrow.
