How Do You Get to the Top? One Step at a Time
How Do You Get to the Top? One Step at a Time
I had a great day out yesterday - some friends and I climbed to the top of Snowdon in glorious sunshine. It was hot, it was steep and it was hard work but the view from the top was glorious and made it all worthwhile. And being a sad little business nerd that I am I couldn't help compare this trip the challenging journey of growing your small business. This particular trip started a while ago. Back in January Julia Doherty had published a list of things she wanted to achieve this year, and in amongst her goals was the line "Stand on top of a mountain". Since that is something I do as often as I can, I offered to help and lead her and a couple of friends up a mountain - it's always best to have someone who's been there before to show you the way! And if you're going to tackle a mountain you may as well choose the biggest one within easy reach, so we picked Snowdon - the tallest mountain in Wales and England (there's plenty taller in Scotland but that is just too far from Rugby for a short run out).So we had a destination, next we needed a date. Admittedly I messed up on this one without realising when the school holidays fell, but we set our plans in place for Wednesday 2nd June and hoped for fine weather.Like all the best business plans, after "What" and "When" the next question is "Who". I wanted to keep the group pretty small so we settled on Julia, her brother Richard, Gloesha Challice and I, with a last minute addition of my partner Rachel when she realised that the weather looked good and didn't want to miss out.And that was about as far as the plans went beyond a few logistical details like "let's meet in the car park at Pen-y-Pass at 10:30". We met, we knew where we were aiming for (the top!), we knew the direction to set out in, and we set off.We met some challenges along the way, a few tricky steep parts of the jouney. But we kept going. Whenever it got tough we did what all small business owners with perseverance do - we just took the next step and kept going. It doesn't matter if you can't see the whole route, or even if you can't see where you're going to be standing in 10 yards time. You just think about the next step in front of you and make that as good as you can. Then from there you can worry about the next step towards your goal of reaching the top.
And guess what? One step at a time you make progress. After a while you can look back and you will be pleasantly surprised by how far you come. Eventually you reach your goal and the world opens up in front of you.And all as a result of progress one step at a time.
