Reclaimed Wood Veneers can be applied to a large variety of objects to make them look like solid wood. The furniture industry uses a lot of veneers in their products. Many table tops are just a veneer over a cheaper wood core for a nice illusion. Veneering wood is a very smart thing to do from a sustainability standpoint. It takes a valuable or rare wood type and extends its coverage many times over, preserving the resource. The first step in laying up the wood veneer is to place your face veneer on a table, face down. The core of the panel is then fed through a glue spreader that applies an even coat of glue to both surfaces. The core is gently set onto the face veneer on the table, and a backer veneer of lower quality is laid on the core to complete the panel.

When four of the panels are ready to be pressed, a scissor lift table takes the waiting panels up the right height to be loaded into the hot press. Each panel gets pressed betweentwo hot metal platens. The press can hold four panels at a time for good efficiency. Once the four slots of the hot press are filled, the operator starts a hydrauliccycle that exerts massive pressures on the four panels simultaneously. The press holds this pressure for several minutes while the glue cures with the heat.

Once the pressure cycle has finished, the hot panels are taken out of press and stacked to cool. The panels can be quite hot as they come out of the press.

After the panels have had time to cool, the panels are taken to the sanding line. Before they go into the sander, it is critical to get all of the excess, overhanging veneer off of the panel. The calibration sander is a very precise machine that takes thousandthsof an inch off of the veneer. There can't be any reclaimed veneer left that isn't bonded to the core at this point.

Once the overhanging veneer has been trimmed off, the panel is measured for exact thickness with a micrometer. This lets the sanding operator set the machine to the correct height. Keep in mind that the reclaimed woodveneer is only a fraction of an inch thick, so this is a critical step. Once the sanders have been set up, the back of the panel is run through. Progressively higher grits are used in the multi headed sanders. The first head usually has 150 grit, with the last head at 180 grit. After the back veneer is sanded, the panel is flipped over and a second machine runs the face veneer. This process takes out all of the imperfections in the production process, as well as scuff marks and small scratches. A bright light in the background is used to spot imperfections in the sanding process so they don't get through to finished products. The panels are ready to ship..
